This two-day, hands-on workshop offers an in-depth exploration of regular expressions (regex), tailored for researchers across various humanities disciplines. The focus is on enhancing text searching and pattern matching techniques, with practical applications in digital humanities research.
No prior experience necessary—just bring your curiosity, one research question, and a laptop!
Points that are going to be discussed, include:
Day 1: Introduction and Foundations
- Introduction to Regular Expressions
Overview of the basic concepts and syntax of regular expressions - Basic Search and Pattern Matching
Hands-on exercises covering simple search patterns, character sets, and basic matching techniques. - Applying Regex in Text Analysis
Introduction to practical examples of how regex can be used in text-based humanities research, including searching historical texts, manuscripts, or literary works.
Day 2: Advanced Techniques and Applications
- Advanced Regular Expressions
Exploration of more complex regex patterns, including quantifiers, grouping, alternation, and lookarounds. - Customizing Searches for Humanities Data
Applying advanced regex techniques to complex, real-world datasets from various humanities disciplines (e.g., literary corpora, archival materials). - Practical Applications and Case Studies
Discussion and hands-on practice with real-world examples, illustrating how regex enhances text analysis in digital humanities research. Participants will also have the opportunity to work on their own data or explore sample datasets.
