University of Rostock and Schwerin-based Photonion GmbH develop spectrometer

Wirtschaftsminister Reinhard Meyer informierte sich am Freitag (9.2.24) in Schwerin bei der Photonion GmbH über das Forschungsvorhaben zur „Entwicklung eines High-Performance Aerosol - Einzelpartikel - Lasermassenspektrometers“. Verbundpartner in dem Projekt ist die Universität Rostock, Institut für Chemie, Lehrstuhl Analytische Chemie. V.l.n.r. Dr. Thorsten Streibel (Universität Rostock), Wirtschaftsminister Reinhard Meyer, Dr. Andreas Walte (Geschäftsführer Photonion), Dr. Robert Irsig (Photonion), (Foto: Photonion).

The aim of the joint research project is to be able to specifically detect environmentally harmful substances using a spectrometer developed in-house. The high-performance, robust and versatile single-particle mass spectrometer to be developed should be able to be used in future for the mass spectrometric characterisation of individual aerosol particles and their chemical and physical analysis. This would be useful for the detection of pollutants and hazardous substances as well as for general environmental analyses. The aim of the sub-project at the University of Rostock is to develop new laser desorption and ionisation processes for use in high-performance mass spectrometers.

The project volume of the joint project totals almost 1.276 million euros. The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is supporting Photonion GmbH with just under 511,500 euros and the University of Rostock with around 511,000 euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
