LLM Research Building
Infrastructure for Research at the Atomic and Molecular Levels
The Life, Light & Matter (LL&M) Research Building is the central research facility of the LL&M Department at the University of Rostock. It brings together state-of-the-art research infrastructure, interdisciplinary laboratories, and scientific expertise to analyze, understand, and harness materials and biological systems at the atomic and molecular levels.
As a shared research platform, the research building creates optimal conditions for excellent basic research, the development of innovative methods, and close collaboration among researchers in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, and the life and health sciences.
Enabling Research
Since it opened in 2015, the research building has served as the experimental hub of the LL&M Department. Its approximately 2,500 m² of laboratory and research space houses state-of-the-art technology platforms, flexible project laboratories, and shared research areas for interdisciplinary projects.
The continuous development of the research infrastructure lays the groundwork for new scientific questions and strengthens the department’s national and international competitiveness.
Competence Center & Research Infrastructure
The research infrastructure of the research building is organized into six competence centers. These centers bring together state-of-the-art large-scale equipment, methodological expertise, and technical support in key technology areas:
- Electron Microscopy (ELMI-MV)
- Mass Spectrometry (MassSpec)
- Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (MagRes)
- Optical Microscopy & Spectroscopy (MicroSpec)
- Interfaces & Surfaces (InterSurf)
- Calorimetry & Thermal Analysis (°CALOR)
Together, they enable the study of materials and biological systems across various scales—from atomic structures and molecular interactions to the functional properties of complex systems.
Working together to create research
The LL&M Research Building serves as an open research platform for interdisciplinary collaboration. Its infrastructure is used by researchers at the University of Rostock as well as by numerous national and international research consortia. The close integration of technology, scientific expertise, and collaboration gives rise to new approaches for the research of tomorrow.
