The new collaborative project “INNO-COMP NH3 Shipping”, based at the University of Rostock and involving members of the Department Life, Light & Matter (LLM), will start in April 2026 and focuses on materials, coatings, and AI-based concepts for the reliable use of ammonia (NH₃) as a carbon-free marine fuel.
Coordinated by Prof. Bert Buchholz, eight partners from academia and applied research are working together to address key challenges of ammonia-powered ship engines, including material durability, emissions, catalyst compatibility, and exhaust aftertreatment. A central component of the project is the use of artificial intelligence and data-driven approaches to detect early-stage material degradation and to predict component lifetimes. This approach strongly aligns with the LLM’s research profile, which integrates materials science, advanced analytics, and data-driven methodologies.
Funded by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with €3.48 million under the program “Application-Oriented Excellence Research,” the project will create 13 new positions for early-career researchers. Close collaboration with the Fraunhofer IGP and an Industrial Advisory Board ensures strong practical relevance.
With INNO-COMP NH3 Shipping, the University of Rostock and the LLM are making a significant contribution to the development of sustainable energy solutions for future maritime transport.
