With the official establishment of the High Energy Density Initiative (HEDI), the University of Rostock and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) have reached an important milestone for the future of energy research. The new initiative brings together expertise in high-energy-density physics and lays the foundation for internationally visible cutting-edge research in laser science and fusion research.
For the Department of Life, Light & Matter (LL&M), the creation of HEDI is of particular significance. The new research center will be located in the immediate vicinity of the LL&M research building on the Rostock Südstadt campus and will further strengthen the site's scientific development. Close links already exist between the researchers involved in HEDI and the Department’s ongoing research activities.
“HEDI opens up new opportunities for interdisciplinary research at the interfaces of physics, materials science, laser technologies, and data-driven science. At the same time, the initiative enhances the international visibility of Rostock as a research location and creates attractive conditions for outstanding early-career researchers,” says Prof. Dr. Ralf Zimmermann, Speaker of the Department LL&M.
The close collaboration between the University of Rostock and HZDR builds on existing scientific strengths and is expected to expand further through joint professorships, shared research infrastructures, and international partnerships. The common goal is to advance the understanding of matter under extreme conditions and thereby contribute to the development of future energy technologies.
The Department LL&M warmly welcomes the establishment of HEDI and sees it as an important stimulus for the continued development of the Rostock science campus as well as for the strategic positioning of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as a location for excellent research.
