How will research into matter under extreme conditions change our future? With the founding of the High Energy Density Institute (HEDI), the answer is now within reach. This new research facility, which is being created in close collaboration with the University of Rostock and the Helmholtz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf, will be significantly shaped by the renowned scientists Ronald Redmer and Dominik Kraus from the Department of Life, Light & Matter and the Institute of Physics.
On 1 August 2024, the Minister Presidents of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony paved the way for HEDI with a declaration of intent. The institute's new building, which is being constructed in the immediate vicinity of the LLM research building, will have a lasting impact on the scientific landscape.
HEDI will not only simulate the conditions in planetary nuclei, but will also make decisive progress in nuclear fusion research - a potential energy source of the future. In the coming years, this research could create the basis for a sustainable, inexhaustible energy supply and fundamentally expand our understanding of the physical world.
