Literature and Space (Hybrid Workshop)

Since the 1980s, the focus of cultural and social sciences has increasingly turned toward the concept of space. The geographer Edward Soja provided an intuitively understandable label for this development: the spatial turn. However, in response to the question of what space is and how it can be studied, an entire landscape of scholarly answers has emerged over the last 40 years.

The workshop "Literature and Space" invites all interested parties to explore this landscape within the field of literary studies. We will particularly focus on the diversity of methods ranging between close and distant reading, between qualitative and quantitative approaches, and between analog and computer-assisted procedures. What concepts of space exist in relation to literature? What can we learn about literature by examining space within and around it? What insights do different approaches offer?

We are pleased to welcome Prof. Dr. Berenike Herrmann (University of Bielefeld), Dr. Jana-Katharina Mende (Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg), and Daniel Kababgi(University of Bielefeld), both on-site and online. They will share first-hand experiences from their research projects.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own texts: in addition to theoretical discussion, there will be a practical hands-on session where tools from Computational Literary Studies can be tested.

The event is organized and supported by the research focus "Digital Hermeneutics" of the Department of Knowledge – Culture – Transformation of the Interdisciplinary Faculty at the University of Rostock and the Institute of German Studies at the University of Rostock. The organizers include Fernanda Alvares Freire, Nils Kellner, Marc Lemke, and Nico Förster.
