invites interested researchers and students to a one-day workshop with Dr Waseem Ahmad Wani from University College Dublin on Friday, 21 August 2026. Dr Wani is hosted by Prof. Hermann Seitz.
The workshop combines practical demonstrations of nanomaterial synthesis and thin-film fabrication with an online introduction to advanced scanning probe microscopy techniques. The morning session will demonstrate sol-gel synthesis and spin coating using ZnO and BiFeO₃ as model systems. In the afternoon, the focus will be on AFM, PFM and KPFM measurements and the interpretation of surface morphology, piezoresponse and surface-potential data.
The workshop concludes a lecture series in which Dr Wani presented modern atomic force microscopy methods for investigating local functional material properties. In two lectures, he introduced advanced AFM techniques such as PFM, KPFM and cAFM and explained how environmental conditions—including temperature, gas atmosphere and humidity—affect the properties of ferroelectric materials. The series thus spans the entire research process, from scientific principles and material synthesis to the nanoscale characterisation of functional materials.
The workshop is open to interested students, doctoral researchers, postdoctoral researchers and scientists.
