A team from Rostock and Kiel, including Postdoc Adittya Chaudhuri from the University of Rostock, has developed an exciting mathematical approach, supported by a pilot study. Using category theory and the "Systems Biology Graphical Notation" (SBGN), they bring order to the chaos of cellular processes. Their goal? To piece together networks like Lego blocks, zooming in or simplifying details as needed. This project, led by Prof. Ralf Köhl (Mathematics, CAU Kiel) and Prof. Olaf Wolkenhauer (Systems Biology, University of Rostock), has fostered sustainable collaboration between the two universities. The result is a biochemistry toolkit that makes the inner workings of cells not only accessible to experts but fascinating for anyone curious about life’s building blocks. Mathematics meets biology—in the smartest way possible!
