„Maritime Systeme

„Altern des Individuums und der Gesellschaft"

Wissen, Kultur und Transformation”.

Maritime Systems

The department Maritime Systems unites oceanographers, engineers, agriculturists, humanities and social students as well as economists and lawyers. They develop interdisciplinary scenarios and strategies for the habitat and economic coastal zones. Jointly, they are seeking responses to the complex questions concerning the future of civilization.

Consequences of climate change count amongst the greatest challenges. They are particularly dramatic in the marine sections of the highly complex system Earth. The sea level will rise, the sea water temperature will increase and the ph-value will sink. New technologies and new political concepts are required in order to adapt the population to these conditions. At the same time, seas and coastlines offer new opportunities, for example in the fields of nourishment, emission free energy production and the increasing world trade.

The hanseatic and university town of Rostock is home to a broad range of maritime sciences. shipbuilding and measurement engineering, seafaring and port management, fishing and aquaculture, coastal protection and oceanography – theory and practice in these sciences are tradition for centuries. The new department aims at reinforcing the dialogue between these disciplines and creating innovative solutions within this close network. By this means, Rostock is able to further develop its position as a top international site for the research of maritime systems.

The Department thereby constitutes itself as a strong partner in the maritime industry which is of outstanding importance to the coastal area of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Besides fundamental research the development of marketable products equally belongs to the aims of all scientific facilities involved.
